Bisexual icon Halsey has been bringing us hits like Without Me and Colors since their debut song Ghost was released in 2015. Since then, the star has won countless awards, and has even starred in shows like Roadies and American Dad! But how much do you know about this multi-genre artist? Here are five things you might not know…
Halsey can play eight instruments
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Halsey revealed that they could play eight instruments including the violin, viola, cello, and guitar. It was in fact Halsey’s grandmother who taught them how to play piano at the age of four, using tunes from the musical Cats.
Halsey uses she/they pronouns
In 2021, Halsey updated the pronouns in their Instagram bio to “she/they”, telling fans that they were happy with either pronoun. The star added that the pronouns felt “most authentic” to them. In an interview with Allure later that year, the star called out the publication for misgendering them throughout the article and said that they would not be doing any more press. Halsey tweeted: “Hey @Allure_magazine. First, your writer made a focal point in my cover story my pronouns and you guys deliberately disrespected them by not using them in the article.”
Before debuting as an artist, they were homeless
Throughout their career, Halsey has spoken openly about their experience of being homeless before becoming an artist. Speaking at the Ending Youth Homelessness: A Benefit For My Friend’s Place In Hollywood in 2019, Halsey said: “The reality is that this epidemic is deadly. It’s more than young people needing validation and needing people to listen to them. It’s more than identity. It’s more than hope. This is life or death.”
Halsey is passionate about spreading information about endometriosis
After being diagnosed with endometriosis in 2016, Halsey has shared their own experience with the condition. Endometriosis is a long-term condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside of the uterus, which can cause extreme pain and fertility problems. Earlier this year, the singer posted a picture following a recent procedure, and followed it with an Instagram story with the caption: “Endometriosis gang.” Throughout their career, the singer has also been open about their health conditions such as Ehlers-Danlos syndromes, Sjogren’s syndrome and mast cell activation syndrome, and more recently lupus and leukaemia.
They have released a poetry book
In 2020, Halsey released a poetry collection entitled I Would Leave Me If I Could which delved into never-seen-before poems about longing, love, and the nuances of bipolar disorder. The collection was praised for its raw honesty and intimate revelations about the star.
