Kemah Bob’s debut Edinburgh Fringe show, Miss Fortunate, is an energetic whirlwind that showcases her undeniable talent as a storyteller and comic. Kemah’s presence is captivating and she quickly draws us into her vibrant world with ease.
The show revolves around Kemah’s misadventures in Thailand, where she humorously recounts a series of ill-fated decisions made during a manic episode. Her ability to blend dramatic irony with offbeat humour is evident, and the callbacks throughout the show are cleverly done, which adds a satisfying depth to her narrative. The way she handles difficult topics like her experience of bipolar disorder is also commendable – it can be difficult for comedians to talk about mental health without it feeling awkward, overdone or uninteresting but Kemah does it with ease, skill and sensitivity.
Miss Fortunate does straddle an interesting line between musical comedy and classic stand-up, with several songs sprinkled throughout the performance. While the songs themselves are enjoyable, they occasionally feel oddly placed, leaving the audience unsure whether they’re watching a comedy set or a musical comedy show.
Kemah’s anecdotes are engaging and enjoyable and her infectious energy and larger-than-life personality more than makeup for any slower moments. The structure of the show is solid, with well-executed callbacks that tie everything together nicely.
Overall, Miss Fortunate is an impressive and entertaining debut that leaves no doubt about Kemah’s potential. Despite a few pacing issues and the slightly unconventional mix of styles, it’s a highly enjoyable hour that showcases a fresh and exciting voice in comedy.
Kemah Bob: Miss Fortunate is at Pleasance Courtyard until August 25 (not 21) at 7.05 pm.
