I was genuinely surprised by how completely brilliant Dylan Mulvaney’s new Edinburgh Fringe show Faghag is! This show is a vibrant, self-aware rollercoaster that blends musical theatre, cabaret, and confessional storytelling into one extremely entertaining hour. From the moment Dylan greets the audience in her angel wings, it’s clear we’re in for something special.
Dylan’s charm and wit shine through as she takes us through her life story, from her Catholic upbringing to her internet stardom and everything in between. The show is packed with hilarious anecdotes, touching moments, and some seriously catchy musical numbers. The way she balances humour with deeper, more personal reflections is masterful, making the show both laugh-out-loud funny and surprisingly thought-provoking.
While the title Faghag might raise the occasional eyebrow, Dylan handles it with a level of nuance that’s both bold and refreshing. She dives into her identity with an honesty that’s both endearing and empowering, challenging binaries, hate and society.
The production is slick, with impressive sets and costumes that add to the overall polish of the show, but it doesn’t feel overproduced or rehearsed. Video cameos are a nice touch, and the sing-along at the end leaves the audience on a high note.
In short, Faghag is an absolute must-see. Dylan Mulvaney has crafted a show that is as joyous as it is insightful, and I can’t wait to see what she does next.
Dylan Mulvaney: FAGHAG is at Assembly George Square Studios until August 25 (not 21) at 9.40 pm.
