The last month of summer is set to be a good one for LGBTQIA releases. This August is filled with new films and TV to watch from popular series to exciting new films.
So sit yourself on the sofa and grab the popcorn, there’s tons of new releases to carry you through to the autumn.
The Umbrella Academy Season Four
8 August
The dysfunctional Hargreeves siblings are back for the fourth and final series of The Umbrella Academy. Queer storylines have been integral to the show since the start, with fans treated to two during the show, though neither Klaus and Dave nor Viktor and Sissy got a happy ending. Still, we can’t wait to see what these reluctant superheroes get up to in their final timeline.
Bel-Air Season Three
15 August
Turning Will Smith’s The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air into 21st century drama naturally meant elements of the story would change. For starters, Hilary Banks is now a social media influencer. The show has also decided to explore a queer storyline through the youngest Banks, Ashley, who developed a crush on her friend Lucia and advocated for the LGBTQIA community in her church. We can’t wait to see what’s next for Ashley!
Emily In Paris Season Four Part One
15 August
The last season of the comedy-drama series introduced a sapphic relationship between Camille and Sofia. Unfortunately, Camille ended their relationship and got engaged to her boyfriend Gabriel. But the show ended with Camille breaking things off with Gabriel when she realises he has feelings for Emily. With the fashionable frenchwoman now single, could another sapphic relationship be on the cards for season four?
RuPaul’s Drag Race Global All Stars
16 August
The first season of a global version of All Stars is coming to Paramount+. Twelve drag queens from around the world will represent their home countries, including Drag Race legend Alyssa Edwards and the UK’s Kitty Scott-Claus.
Close To You
23 August
Elliot Page isn’t just treating us to The Umbrella Academy this August. He is the star of a new film following Sam, a trans man heading home for the first time in years. Elliot told The Guardian that his experience in this film was the “highlight of my life as an actor”.
Cuckoo
23 August
Queer icon Hunter Schafer will be returning to the silver screen in a new horror-thriller. She plays Gretchen, a teenager who moves to the German Alps with her father and soon notices disturbing occurrences.
Only Murders In The Building Season Four
27 August
The show may be centred on three strangers obsessed with true crime, but we’re obsessed with Selena Gomez’s Mabel Mora. In season two, Mabel had a queer romance with Alice, played by Cara Delevingne. Even though they didn’t work out, it was lovely to see. For season four, we’d love to see another sapphic relationship for Mabel or more of cop Donna Williams and her wife Kiara.
Sing Sing
30 August
Colman Domingo gave a phenomenal performance in Rustin last year and is set to give another one in Sing Sing. The film follows a theatre program in a prison and its impact on the inmates.
