Amy Spalding, a fan favourite on sapphic dating show I Kissed A Girl, has revealed that representation was at the heart of her decision to do the show.

On 25 July, Amy was a guest star on the podcast Antics With Ash. She spoke about how she was scouted for the show and the desire to fill a sapphic void in media representation was the reason she said yes. “Someone’s got to walk so that someone else can run… or frolic.”

She added that she wouldn’t have done “another series further down the line”. But, since this was the first sapphic dating show to air in the UK, she wanted to be a part of it.  “It was the proudest thing I’ve ever done and probably will be the proudest thing I ever do.”

Being on the show has made Amy a queer public figure, but she told Ash she wasn’t worried about facing bigotry after the show ended. “I’m not that worried about homophobia because if you’re being homophobic, you’re an idiot.”

Instead, she was more worried about how she would come across to audiences. “I had a posh girl narrative,” Amy said. She was clear that she was so upfront about being posh because she didn’t want to hide her privilege. “I’m very aware that people of other races and intersectionalities do have it harder.”

Since the show, she’s been overwhelmed by how people have reacted to both the show and her. “People look at me like I’m their big dykey sister,” she joked before adding that she was “just a girl”. Dating too has been overwhelming, but Amy hinted that she was in the early stages of seeing someone. That someone is not Dannii Minogue, but Amy did exclaim “Dannii is a babe” in the middle of the episode.

Thinking back on the show, Amy reiterated that she was proud to have been on the UK’s first sapphic dating show. “We’ll be in the history books.”
