Reneé Rapp has taken the world by storm. From those who have been with her since she first played Regina George on stage in 2019, to those who only found her when she reprised the role in this year’s Mean Girls movie musical, the actress/singer has amassed a following of die-hard fans. Her hilariously candid interview style, honesty about her mental health and powerhouse vocals have made her a force to behold.
When fellow musician Towa Bird joined Reneé on tour, their chemistry was undeniable. After the pair hard-launched, fans lost their minds. It’s not our fault we’re like in love with them! We’re like in love with them!
But who exactly is Reneé in love with? Here’s everything you need to know about Towa Bird…
She was born in Hong Kong
Towa had quite an international childhood. She was born in Hong Kong to a British father and a Filipino mother and grew up in both London and Thailand.
Her international upbringing meant community was really important to Towa. Talking to UCLA Radio, she said: “I’m Filipino, so like, what has always been really important to my family and growing up is like, a sense of community – whether that be through like, friends or family.”
Towa is a musician, just like Reneé
She is both a singer and guitarist. Her debut album American Hero was released on 28 June. In her own words, Towa’s music is “if ’70s classic rock and ’90s Brit-pop had a baby, and the baby was queer, Asian, and a woman”.
She has also expressed a desire to become known as the “lesbian Paul McCartney”. It’s fitting then that she’s dating the self-proclaimed former “bisexual Justin Bieber”.
The two have performed together
Towa and Reneé have worked together professionally, as Towa was one of the opening acts on the Snow Hard Feelings Tour. But Reneé is not the only big name Towa has performed with. She was featured as a guitarist on Brutal in Olivia Rodrigo’s documentary Driving Home 2 U (A Sour Film).
During the Snow Hard Feelings tour, Towa regularly joined Reneé on stage and their chemistry had rumours flying. When performing together, the pair would often end a song only inches apart and stare into each other’s eyes.
Towa herself added fuel to the fire by posting a TikTok of her and Reneé covering Linger by The Cranberries during their final show together. The caption read: “When d*kes linger.”
They became official at the Oscars afterparty
After months of speculation, Reneé and Towa confirmed they were dating by walking the red carpet together at Vanity Fair’s Oscars afterparty in March 2024.
A TikTok of the two, posted by the magazine, ran with the caption: “Reneé Rapp and Towa Bird make their red carpet debut as a couple.” In the video, the musicians pose for pictures, with Towa’s arm around Reneé’s waist.
However, the two didn’t confirm they were dating and there was some controversy following the afterparty, as fans were not sure if the couple had intended to hard-launch their relationship.
Towa played with Reneé at Coachella
While the two have performed together before (the two even performed on the Late Night Show With Seth Meyers), they shared one of their biggest stages yet at this year’s Coachella.
Towa joined Reneé on stage for Tummy Hurts. She came out to mass applause and a quick kiss from her girlfriend! It was a lovely full circle moment as the two were first photographed together at the Interscope Records Coachella party a year earlier.
