Welcome to Leo season, babes! The sun is out, life is sweet, and your hair looks amazing. It’s time to put on your best sparkly outfit and dazzle the Karaoke bar like the star you are! Leos are best known (and dare I say it, adored) for our outgoing personalities, show-stopping fashion sense and wild sense of humour.
But let’s set the record straight, we are more than just charming, fashionable and beautiful. Leos are also very loyal, will fight hard for the people and causes that are important to us, and have a lot of love in our hearts. Some say that we’reprideful, self-obsessed and stubborn but I’m sure they’re just jealous. When did you first realise that I’m a Leo?
Anyway, here are some of our favourite Leo icons who are in the LGBTQIA community or allies!
Madonna (16 August)
Who is more of a Leo than the woman who invented the cone bra and brought Voguing to the mainstream? Madonna was also a vocal supporter of HIV/AIDS awareness in the 80s, when misinformation was rife, and people diagnosed with the illness were feared or ignored.
Phoebe Bridgers (17 August)
With her melancholy lyrics and ambient sound, it might surprise you to learn that Phoebe Bridgers is a Leo. Leos wear our hearts on our sleeves, and it cuts deeply when people betray our trust.
Rina Sawayama (16 August)
This iconic queer electro-pop singer is a Leo. Didn’t I say that Leos love being in the spotlight, serving looks and glamour?
Dua Lipa (22 August)
Another Leo queen, Dua Lipa speaks openly and often in interviews about her love and respect for the LGBTQIA community.
Cara Delevingne (12 August)
British supermodel, Cara Cara Delevingne, identifies as sexually fluid and donates to LGBTQIA foundations.
Demi Lovato (20 August)
Demi Lovato is non-binary and pansexual. They are also a strong activist raising awareness for important topics such as mental health, addiction, eating disorders and sexual assault.
Kizzy Edgell (15 August)
The Heartstopper star (who plays Darcy in the show) and role model for queer teens came out in 2023 as transgender and queer, saying they use he/him or they/them pronouns.
Daniel Radcliffe (23 July)
Daniel Radcliffe is best known for his lead role in Harry Potter, but he also advocates for LGBTQIA people and has worked with The Trevor Project. Along with other members of the Harry Potter cast, he publicly opposes J.K Rowling’s transphobia, saying: “Transgender women are women.”
Andrew Garfield (20 August)
Star of Spiderman and Tick, Tick Boom!, Andrew Garfield dedicated his Tony Award in 2018 to the LGBTQIA community.
Sandra Bullock (26 July)
The super-famous actress accepted her Academy Award by thanking her mum for teaching her that: “No race, no class system, no sexual orientation makes us better than anyone else.”
Baby Queen (19 August)
The indie-pop singer is best known for her music being on the soundtrack for Heartstopper. She has said that she is bisexual, but is still figuring herself out and does not want to be defined by her sexuality.
Greta Gerwig (4 August)
Greta Gerwig is loved for her female-focused films, especially Barbie with roles from queer icons Hari Nef and Ncuti Gatwa. Speaking about Barbie, she has said: “There is no way that we could have told this story without bringing in the LGBTQIA community.”
Charlize Theron (7 August)
Charlize Theron appeared in support of the community at a televised event to combat the rise of anti–drag laws in the US and says that she will “f–k anyone up” who comes for the LGBTQIA community. Her daughter is also trans. Like I said, Leos fight hard for what they love!
DIVA magazine celebrates 30 years in print in 2024. If you like what we do, then get behind LGBTQIA media and keep us going for another generation. Your support is invaluable.
