Katie Gavin, the lead vocalist of MUNA, announced via Instagram that she is set to release her debut solo single Aftertaste later this month.

The singer first teased that she had news to share earlier this week (12 July) when she posted a TikTok with the caption: “When I have something to announce but I don’t know when the right time to say it is.”

She proceeded to post three more videos that alluded to upcoming news, including one of a solo photoshoot. Finally, on 16 July, Katie posted a still from the photoshoot to her Instagram with a caption that announced she would be releasing Aftertaste on 23 July and it can be pre-saved now.

A snippet of the song was also shared on TikTok and her Instagram story. In typical MUNA fashion, the song is about having complicated feelings for a former partner. Katie and bandmate Naomi McPherson used to date and the pair often write songs together about how it affects their relationship now.

The song is Katie’s first venture away from MUNA and comes just over a year after the band released their most recent single The One That Got Away. Both the band’s official Instagram and Naomi have posted stories encouraging fans to pre-save Katie’s single.

Initial fan reaction has been positive, with many taking to Twitter to share their support. One said: “Princess of the world (Katie Gavin) appreciation post bc I’m so excited about Aftertaste!!!!!!!!!”

Another said: “If anyone cares my favourite song is Aftertaste idc if I haven’t heard much of it yet it’s by Katie Gavin.”

Katie has also received supportive comments on her announcement post from queer comedians Bowen Yang and Caleb Hearon, both of whom have been guests on MUNA’s podcast Gayotic, and fellow musicians Jensen McRae and Amber Bain, professionally known as The Japanese House.
