“Trans young people and their families are at breaking point”

The charity Mermaids, whose aim has been to support trans and non-binary young people and their families since 1995, launches a Crowdfunder to ensure that they are able to maintain the help that they provide to the community.
“Trans young people and their families are at breaking point. We need to act urgently to ensure that our staff can continue to pick up the phone to more people in need, to robustly hold the new government to account for improving the lives of trans youth and to finally achieve the mission we set out to achieve 30 years ago,” the charity urges.
With trans youth facing urgent problems such as accessing healthcare, bullying in schools, increasing media transphobia and an emergency ban on puberty blockers, the work that Mermaids do is more critical than ever.
The charity is reaching out due to the ongoing Charity Commission inquiry, which is significantly weakening their services, staff wellbeing and finances. They have also cited other issues in securing funding such as hesitations from corporate partners due to worries that their support for the charity will receive backlash.
Mermaids has worked tirelessly to advocate for trans people and there are positive moves forward such as increasing local groups around the UK and their recent Trans Youth Manifesto highlighting the issues that trans young people care most deeply about.
With the newly elected government in place, it is important to put trans rights on the list of their priorities and donating to the Crowdfunder demonstrates that Mermaids is making a significant impact in local communities across the country.
