The first ever London Dyke Market will be debuting at Space Station Sixty-Five gallery in Kennington on 6 July. Celebrating lesbian creativity, crafts(wo)manship, culture and community, The London Dyke Market will provide an exciting new space for lesbians to come together.
Curated by lesbian artist Emily Witham, The London Dyke Market will showcase brand-new work which reflects on the idea of what it means to be a dyke in 2024. Earlier this year Emily launched her new exhibition of illustrations for Joelle Taylor’s new novel The Night Alphabet.
“Art is activism and there is a legacy of great creativity and ‘Do It Yourself’ attitude within UK lesbian culture,” Emily commented on the debut of The London Dyke Market. “This is the right time to organise something like this, by dykes for dykes. Curating the individuals involved in this event was a lot of fun, expect to discover your new favourite artist and your next ex-girlfriend at The London Dyke Market.”
At this community event, people will be able to buy work directly from the maker. In the style of a “sapphic summer fête”, there will be a diversity of dyke creatives, fashion designers, sex toy makers, barbers, archivists, activists, poets, artists, chefs, writers, ceramicists, photographers, tattooists, piercers, an L Word themed kissing booth and lots and lots of lesbians.
