“There is so much talent in the trans and gender non-conforming community that isn’t showcased because of lack of opportunities and transphobic backlash”

When you don’t fit neatly into a gender box, you often have to find ways of creating your identity yourself through music, art, poetry, fashion. This is why we are choosing to celebrate the unique styles of those who identify under (around, through and beyond!) the trans and gender non-conforming umbrella.
“Fashion shouldn’t be gendered and the fact that it is, really does something to the psyche when you don’t see yourself in the clothing that is allegedly meant for you.”
(Model, Robyn, They/Them)
There is now beginning to be more gender diversity representation in the media, but this is still often determined by cis people, in relation to a cis narrative and discussed by a cis audience. Often depicting stereotypes of trans identities, fetishizing trans people or portraying them as the villain. The “trans/gender non-conforming umbrella” is much vaster and more nuanced than is understood with many stories of a beautiful, caring and culturally rich community yet to be told.
Recently the BBC received over 100 complaints after Trans Actress, Yasmin Finney, starred in a Christmas special of Dr Who. The show’s writer, Russel T Davies, released a statement in support of Yasmin, reinforcing his aim to represent more of society. Whilst it is great to have a young trans actress star in a popular TV programme, why should trans artists be fighting for the spotlight only to be fed to the wolves for debate when they get there?! There is so much talent in the trans and gender non-conforming community that isn’t showcased because of lack of opportunities and transphobic backlash.

Companies are handing us breadcrumbs and getting commended for their solidarity, whilst also churning out transphobic articles and collaborating with other companies which contribute to the oppressive system we exist in. This happens to all people who experience marginalisation, including people who are disabled, fat, refugees, Black and global majority. By funding and supporting more intersectional trans and queer lead enterprises we can take back control of our narrative and fight for liberation for all.
“With the constant discrimination our community faces living in the UK, it feels pretty punk rock to be a part of Self-Made and to be taking back our narrative.” (

Therefore, to celebrate the array of Trans and Gender Non-Conforming identities we have produced the “Self–Made” Trans+ Fashion Show, a platform for us by us; a collaborative event with models showcasing their own style including suits, kink wear, packers and a dress made from oestrogen packets. Whilst fashion does not equal gender this is a way for us to visibly deconstruct gender norms, showcase our individual identities and celebrate Trans+ Joy.
Event: 16 May 7.30 pm, Signature Brew, Haggerston. Follow the link below for tickets:
