BBC Three have released the first two episodes of their groundbreaking new sapphic dating show I Kissed A Girl. Hosted by none other than queer icon Dannii Minogue, 10 single girls enter an Italian Masseria where kisses are the main currency.

After all the girls were coupled up with a kiss in episode one, last night (6 May) we saw the single girls settle into their summer of love. One moving moment occurred when footballer Georgia asked the group how they felt about using the word “lesbian”.

“I don’t mind it, really and truly, I use it,” one of the other girls, Priya, replied. “I don’t know why people shy away from that word.”

Georgia went on to share her own experience with the label, saying that at school the word “lesbian” had been used in a “negative way”.

“It is a word that has been taken and made negative,” she carried on. “Growing up, it was used in a way that suggested something was wrong with you.”

The girls continued to have a heartfelt chat about the term “lesbian”, which resulted in an emotional queer history lesson from Georgia about why the “L” in LGBTQIA comes first. Discussing the HIV/AIDS crisis, Georgia told the rest of the group that because lesbians had been the ones fighting for the rights and healthcare of gay men, the L was placed first.

“Being a lesbian is something to be so proud of, but a lot of the time I don’t really know how to,” Georgia said tearfully. “I need to just say to my younger self ‘You are a lesbian’ – why would you not want to be a lesbian?”
