After an announcement on Instagram, it’s official that WNBA star Brittney Griner, and her wife, Cherelle, are expecting their first baby together this coming summer.

The post displayed the baby’s ultrasound photos, alongside the happy couple holding hands. The caption reads: “Can’t believe we’re less than three months away from meeting our favourite human being.”

This year has already been one to celebrate for the Phoenix Mercury player when she was honoured by Baylor University, Texas, where she graduated in 2013. Her number 42 jersey was retired by the faculty to honour her sporting legacy. For an athlete, this is one of the highest honours that you can receive, which usually occurs when a player has left that team, retired, or passed away.

Brittney Griner is the seventh Baylor women’s basketball player to receive this honour and have her jersey retired.

She is now entering her 11th season of playing in the WNBA and is a nine-time WNBA All-Star, also having won two Olympic Gold medals with Team USA.

But, it hasn’t all been positive for the couple. In February 2022, Brittney was detained over drug charges, and spent almost 300 days (about 10 months) in Russia in custody, as a result. Cherelle tried endlessly to try and get her wife freed, and thanks to her hard work, Brittney returned to the USA in December 2022.

Cherelle was previously a teacher, but in 2023, became an attorney, after passing her bar exam.

Congratulations to the happy couple, they both deserve this wonderful news after a rather difficult few years.
