Ready to be reunited with your favourite chaotic Australian students? Heartbreak High is back for season two and Netflix has promised new faces as well as even more high school drama.

The first season of Heartbreak High dropped in 2022 and won numerous awards, including an International Emmy. Based on the long-running 90s TV series, the Netflix remake has been praised for tackling modern issues facing teenagers and spent three weeks in the global top ten TV shows on Netflix.

What happened in season one of Heartbreak High?

The first season of Heartbreak High followed a group of students at the fictional Hartley High, one of the lowest-ranked public schools in Sydney. The season kicked off with a leaked dating map created by besties Amerie and Harper, leading to Amerie becoming a social outcast.

Major storylines included Amerie’s sexual awakening and relationships with Malakai and Dusty, as well as Quinni fighting for better sex education. Darren explored his queer identity and Harper’s traumatic past was revealed.

The show was celebrated for covering topics such as sexuality, neurodiversity, trauma, consent, and chosen family. Strong friendship bonds were a key theme, highlighting the importance of social support for young people in their formative years. Some of the most talked-about moments included the Mardi Gras episodes, Malakai being assaulted by police and the high-stakes season finale which laid the groundwork for a fiery second season.

With its diverse representation, honest portrayal of Gen Z life, and willingness to tackle heavy topics, Heartbreak High won over both fans and critics. It portrayed the messy, complicated realities of teen life with honesty and humour.

What to expect from Heartbreak High Season Two

All your faves are back for your viewing pleasure. But of course, fresh hotties, a new PE teacher and a mystery assailant throw any hopes of a peaceful term straight out the window. There’s also a race for school captain which will see dirty tactics infiltrate Hartley High.

The teaser trailer offers a taste of what’s to come, including plenty of pashing, gossip, more dating maps and what appears to be a massive fire in the school. The trailer also includes new characters, like teacher Timothy Voss (played by Fargo’s Angus Sampson) who Netflix describe as an “uber-masculine sports teacher set to put an end to the bleeding hearts of Hartley High”.

Meanwhile, new student Rowan Callaghan (played by Sam Rechner, known for Ruby’s Choice) is poised to be caught in a steamy love triangle with Amerie and Malakai.

Kartanya Maynard, known for Deadloch and Gold Diggers, joins the cast as outspoken student Zoe Clarke. As a proponent of abstinence, Zoe will be a formidable challenge to the Sex Life Matters club, vowing to take down their sex education efforts from the inside.

Fans will be happy to see the return of Ayesha Madon, Chloé Hayden, and 2023 Logie winner Thomas Weatherall. James Majoos, Asher Yasbincek, Will McDonald, Gemma Chua-Tran, Bryn Chapman Parish, Sherry-Lee Watson, Brodie Townsend and Josh Heuston will also be back for term two. With the original ensemble largely intact, you can expect the much-loved relationship drama to deepen further in the upcoming season, along with plenty of twists and turns.
