Sapphic Corrie fans have been rejoicing today as character DS Lisa Swain has been confirmed as gay. Detective Sergeant Lisa Swain, played by Vicky Myers, first appeared on the show back in 2021 for a short run of eight contracted episodes but has since been promoted to show regular.

When asked about extending Swain’s storyline, Vicky expressed her excitement “to be creatively challenged” and how she is “very thankful to be given this massive opportunity.”

Originally leading the investigation into assaults on Nina Lucas and Seb Franklin, DS Swain has been seen most recently hunting down stalker Justin Rutherford and serial killer Stephen Reid. She will return to the cobbles to investigate the disappearance of Lauren Bolton, played by Cait Fitton.

DS Swain’s time on the cobbles also intertwined with Amy Barlow’s storyline about consensual sex. The storyline explored beneath Swain’s hard exterior, showcasing how she’s “passionate about violence against women”. Vicky explained how viewers will ultimately “see this progress through this storyline.”

Vicky also shared with Manchester Evening News her eagerness to delve into the character’s life outside of work. “We’re only just scratching the surface with Swain,” she explained. “I want to know more about her.”

She also shared that her character has a teenage daughter and how that may influence Swain’s future: “She perhaps has seen somebody whose caught her eye but she’s far too busy focussing on this investigation and her career, being a single mum and home life as well.”

Taking to X on Monday (4th March), Vicky expressed her thanks to Corrie fans for their kind words:

Corrie fans have also been sharing their reactions and expressing delight at the news:

Coronation Street has been increasing its inclusion over the years, with a gay wedding in October 2023 and WLW relationships such as Asha Alahan (Tanisha Gorey) and Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher). Swain’s return to the cobbles promises more LGBTQIA romance on TV screens for 2024.

Coronation Street continues Wednesday (6 March) at 8 pm on ITV.
