We have been robbed of another queer Disney character! One of the writers from the cancelled Lizzie McGuire reboot, Jonathan Hurwitz, has revealed that Lizzie’s best friend Miranda was going to have been written as queer in the show.
Posting to TikTok, Jonathan spoke about how the reboot was based on a 30-year-old Lizzie and they wanted to portray her as an adult. However, Disney found the content too mature, which led to creative differences which in turn resulted in the cancellation of the show.
“We talked a lot about adult Miranda, and her being a musician was part of the discussion, so someone who’s on tour with a band. Her being queer was also part of the discussion, so you [probably] have met the woman that she’s in a relationship with,” he said.

Unsurprisingly, fans flocked to the comment section of his TikToks to vocalise their anguish. “I will NEVER forgive Disney+ for cancelling the show. I want to see it BADLY,” one wrote.
“It was the only show I was excited for when Disney+ launched,” another said.
This is not the first time that Disney has failed us and our queer dreams. Last year a former showrunner for Wizards Of Waverly Place confirmed that Alex Russo aka THE Selena Gomez was bisexual, with the comment that “it was quite obvious”. Fans were left devastated after the robbery of what could have been a turbulent relationship between Alex and Stevie (played by Hayley Kiyoko AKA Lesbian Jesus).
It’s heartbreaking to know that we finally could have witnessed the queer awakening in some of our favourite childhood characters. Here’s for hoping that eventually a reboot will be released that finally gives the characters that deserve it, their queer recognition!
