To celebrate 20 years of the iconic show The L Word, in this week’s DIVA Dating Digest, we’re taking a look at one of its most beloved characters: Alice Pieszecki, played by none other than Leisha Hailey.
Leisha actually began her rise to stardom in the world of music in 1991 when she formed the pop duo The Murmurs! The group disbanded when Leisha joined The L Word in 2005, where she soon became recognised as the bisexual icon Alice Pieszecki.
Since then, Leisha has starred in a number of shows such as Supernatural, and has also gone to the big screen in films like La Cucina and Fertile Ground.
Let’s take a look back at this queer icon’s dating history.
k.d. lang (1996 – 2001)
In a relationship which had LGBTQIA people everywhere starstruck, Leisha and k.d lang were together for nearly five years. This iconic pairing had the sapphic world enthralled – two musicians coming together in harmony. k.d lang’s album Invincible Summer was written just before the pair went their separate ways.
In an interview with CNN in 2000, k.d. lang spoke about the power of love inspiring the album: “Love has a wonderful way of kind of healing things and making you have a fresh outlook.”
Nina Garduno (2004 – 2010)
The L Word star dated fashion designer Nina Garduno for six years where they shared a fairly private personal life. Nina owned Sweatpants To The Stars Brand Free City where she sold everything from hand-printed T-shirts to vintage bikes.
Camila Grey (2011 – 2016)
In 2007, Leisha rejoined the music industry with her band Uh Huh Her alongside her bandmate Camila Grey. While the couple kept most of their relationship fairly private, there was one occasion where Leisha shared a troubling story with her fans.
In 2011, Leisha tweeted that she had been kicked off a Southwest Airlines flight after kissing her girlfriend. “I have been discriminated against by @SouthwestAir,” she tweeted. “Flt. attendant said that it was a ‘family’ airline and kissing was not ok.”
