Christmas is on its way, and independent film production company A24 decided to give us an early present yesterday (19 December). The hotly anticipated first trailer for Kristen Stewart’s upcoming film, Love Lies Bleeding, is finally here.

The film’s official synopsis sounds right up our street: “Reclusive gym manager Lou falls hard for Jackie, an ambitious bodybuilder headed through town to Vegas in pursuit of her dream. But their love ignites violence, pulling them deep into the web of Lou’s criminal family.”

In the two-minute long trailer, we see K Stew’s shy character, Lou, meet and fall in love with bodybuilder Jackie, played by Katy O’Brian, amid plenty of shots of flexing muscles. But their steamy romance is interrupted by Lou’s criminal father, played by the legendary Ed Harris, and chaos soon ensues. Soundtracked by Bronski Beat’s queer bop Smalltown Boy, the trailer is a tantalising taster of what promises to be one of 2024’s most exciting films.

Love Lies Bleeding’s director and co-writer is British filmmaker Rose Glass, who made her directorial debut in 2019 with acclaimed horror film Saint Maud. This will be her second film. Meanwhile, it will mark K-Stew’s first film since 2022, when she was last seen in David Cronenberg’s sci-fi horror Crimes Of The Future.

For Katy O’Brian, a rising Hollywood star and real-life bodybuilder, it will be one of her most high profile roles yet, following recent supporting roles in The Mandalorian and Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania.

The release of the Love Lies Bleeding trailer is only getting us even more excited for 2024, which looks like it’s going to be a year packed full of brilliant queer cinema. Alongside Love Lies Bleeding, some of the most anticipated releases include Andrew Haigh’s All Of Us Strangers with Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott, Ethan Coen’s (of Coen Brothers fame!) Drive Away Dolls with Beanie Feldstein, Margaret Qualley and Pedro Pascal, and Deadpool 3, with Emma Corrin as its non-binary villain. What a lineup!
