Eurovision’s Conchita Wurst made a special appearance to sing her hit song Rise Like A Phoenix at the reception to celebrate the forthcoming opening of the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center (SNMVC). Led by Pride Live, the US-based social advocacy and community engagement organisation for the LGBTQIA community, the Monument Visitor Center will open on 28 June 2024 in New York City.

The Stonewall National Monument Center will be the first LGBTQIA visitor centre within the National Park System and will be recognized amongst other US landmarks like the Grand Canyon and the Statue Of Liberty. The SNMVC was officially designated by President Barack Obama in 2016. Eight years later, the centre will be opening at 51 Christopher Street to preserve, advance, and celebrate the legacy of the Stonewall Rebellion in 1969.

To celebrate the upcoming opening the reception was co-hosted by Pride Live Founding Board Member Lisa Winning, Yayem Co-Founder Nicolas Buteau, and included a performance from musician Joseph Reuben.

The 1969 Stonewall Rebellion has been heralded as one of the most influential moments in LGBTQIA history. It was a legendary moment in LGBTQIA activism and paved the way for the changes in LGBTQIA rights.

DIVA magazine will celebrate 30 years in print in 2024. If you like what we do, then get behind LGBTQIA media and keep us going for another generation. Your support is invaluable.
