In a great year for queer fiction literature, one book shines brightest. The fifth volume of Heartstopper has officially become the fastest-selling graphic novel ever after selling more than 60,000 copies in the first three days following its release.
In addition to making strides in the LGBTQIA fiction sector, the novel was also last week’s best-seller across all categories, reinforcing the positive effect that queer literature is having on the market.
Remember when we told you to pre-order it back in October? We knew how much you’d love it for Queermas!
According to NBC News, the literature scene is entering a renaissance of sorts when it comes to gay fiction, and since 2019, sales have increased by 200%. This is not only due to success stories like Heartstopper or Dykette but also an increasing interest in these types of books on BookTok and online, as well as a move from covering a range of more niche subjects to mainstream content.
Each time Heartstopper author Alice Oseman releases a new installation of the series, it sells increasingly well, and the Netflix spin-off won multiple Emmy awards for their first two seasons. A third season is currently in the works.
The joy of Heartstopper is palpable, and millions of TikTok users have been inspired to recreate content from the show since its inception. While some have called certain moments cringe, the books and show have served to remind us how happy the characters are to be able to tell their stories openly and love whomever they want.
