The LGBTQI community can breathe easier today knowing it has true allies in the White House after a historic win for Joe Biden at the weekend, as well as a rainbow wave of LGBTQI victories emerging all over the country as state representatives over the past week.

Across the country, LGBTQI candidates made progress with notable firsts in the 2020 election, including Democrat Sarah McBride, who became the first trans state senator, winning a seat in Delaware.

Biden’s explicit reference to transgender people also marked the first time in U.S. history a president-elect reference the community in a victory speech.

A champion of LGBTQI rights, Biden promises to make the Equality Act a top priority and hopes to sign what would be a landmark civil rights law within 100 days of being in office.

In that respect, Joe Biden’s victory comes as a victory for the LGBTQI community itself. Celebrities and key figures within the LGBTQI community began celebrating on social media almost immediately after the news was announced. From Stonewall to Lizzo, here’s how the LGBTQI community celebrated the news.
