âGetty Images Creative Bursary will foster and support projects and new content that tell important visual stories, exploring narratives around LGBTQTIA+ livesâŚâ
Getty Images, a world leader in visual communications, has announced its annual global Creative Bursary for 2019 â LGBTQ+ Stories.Â
Getty Imagesâ mission is to âmove the world with imagesâ and this new bursary will help elevate the work of emerging creative talent using their art form to create inclusive visual stories through the medium of still photography.Â
Created in recognition of the challenges faced by new talent when looking to break into the commercial industry, the team behind Getty recognise that in todayâs digital age, it is vital the industry continues to discover and nurture creative talent.
LGBTQ+ Stories will be a one-time Bursary, where three recipients â selected in June 2019 â will be granted sums of either $10,000, $7000 or $3000, awarded by an esteemed panel of creative industry judges.Â
The Creative Bursary is open to aspiring photographers globally.
Shortlisted photography projects will be judged by a panel that will include:
- Kimberly Drew â Founder of Black Contemporary Art. A writer, curator and activist with a passion for art, cultural studies and an avid proponent of black spaces. Kimberly has been selected as one of Brooklyn Magazineâs Brooklyn 100 and her writing has appeared in Glamour, W, Teen Vogue, and Lenny Letter.
- Tony Moxham â Tony is an art director and ceramic artist at Mt Objects and CerĂĄmica La Mejor. He also owns DFC, a design label based in Mexico.
- Eric McNatt â Eric is a portrait photographer whose work has been featured in The New York Times Style Magazine, Vogue, New York Magazine, Fortune and Wired. He has also been nominated for a book award by NYPH for his Character Project.
- Ryan Pfluger â Queer artist and photographer with an MFA in Photo, Video & Related Media from the School of Visual Arts.
- Laurence Philomene â Laurence is a non-binary photographer, director and curator. His work on gender and identity has been published in the likes of Dazed, I- D, Vice, Hunger Magazine, Wonderland. Laurence is currently working on a monograph of their project âme vs othersâ.
- Jess T. Dugan & Vanessa Fabre â Jess is A visual artist who along with her partner Vanessa, explores issues of identity, gender, sexuality and community in her works. Jessâ art features in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. She is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and was selected by the White House as a 2015 Champion of Change.
Applications are open until 28 May 2019. The winners of the Creative Bursary will be announced on 7 June 2019, in preparation for the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.
To apply, photographers must submit the following:
- Links to existing portfolio of work online
- The submission must include: a 200-500-word summary of the project proposal and an inspirational mood board
- A short essay that outlines your approach
- Proposals must be in English
- Submissions must be digital
